404 Errors for disabled product

If I have a product that is now disabled and users that have the product URL bookmarked...rather than bringing the user to a 404 page when they click on the link, is there a recommended "page" to bring them to? Or how can we avoid 404 errors for products that have been disabled? 
We have looked into keeping the product enabled, but only searchable for 3 months. However, we want to avoid the possibility of users searching for products that are no longer available too.

  You can try adding a permanent redirect (301) to a different page or even the homepage in order to avoid displaying a 404 not found page. If anyone else has any other suggestions, though, feel free to share!
